A Question for All of you Climate People (Now about Other Stuff!)
Return to board index
Post by

Alright this is a question for all of you that believe in extreme "warming global/climate change". Just out of curiosity, why is it that you believe in it? Has not the climate been changing since the beginning of "time" as we know it? In the '60s, '70s, and '80s scientists were prophesying a new Ice Age. In the '90s until recently it was "global warming" and now it's "climate change". So why is that you believe in it? Al Gore was supposedly our savior, but now we've switched from global warming to climate change. As I said earlier, has not the climate always been changing? So, why do you believe in it? Discuss please!

But why do you believe in it? I already know what people say it is.

Because the smart people say so!

@ cjadude - If the Ozone Layer has been getting thinner and thinner since about the '60s (according to Al Gore) then wouldn't it be getting hotter? Yet this past winter was one of the coldest in recent years.
@Toldry - So you're just jumping on the bandwagon?

But there will be an Ice Age soon. The thing is for the World 10 years is NOTHING, scientists are
predicting it'll start to happen in around 100 or 200 years,
wich still is nothing to the world, but so much for us.
We won't see that happen, probably our kids won't see that too. And the climate wa always chaging, obviously,
but right now the temperature is raising a lot faster than it ever was
. In fact, without the action of the humanity, Earth should be cooling, not getting warmer.
How can we be getting warmer, yet still have an Ice Age? Also, scientists "predict" many things. But that doesn't make it true.
I have to go for now, but I'll be back and continue the debate later!

I think it's true for two reasons:
1. I was taught it in university in my environmental engineering classes, and supporting it was some pretty hefty research, documentation and evidence.
2. I think it is very possible, if not probable, that more recent human intervention in the environment is leading to a much more rapid warming of the planet, because there is a precedent of human technology adversely affecting the world (leaded gasoline - raising the airborne lead levels to an extreme high in the 50s-60s, creating health problems).
I haven't actually seen that Al gore movie though... I probably should.
Here's a good
site
stating the difference between "global warming" and "climate change". It doesn't mean that people stopped thinking that global warming was happening after the 90s - It's just a more complete way to describe what is happening.

I also think that an ice age is coming, but for a very different reason:
The supermassive volcano that is Yellowstone National Park is overdue to erupt, and has been showing all the signs that it will erupt in the (semi)near future. That's going to cast quite a bit of ash all over the place. Apparently, there's supposed to be a good foot of ash that would cover all of New York City (yes, even that far away).

I've been reading about this topic since I was 8 or 9, and since then, I've only seen evidence and documentation which has added to my belief that the world is heating up unnaturally within a cycle which is itself naturally occurring.
Which does mean that after it gets hot, it's going to get very cold. You aren't going to want to live anywhere between the North Pole and the central United States, the majority of Europe, and Russia.

Uh oh... I'm in trouble then..
wait, no I'm not. I'll be long gone by then.

You shouldn't, I've seen it. It's not a lot of scientific "evidence". It's more of doomsday predictions about how we're all going to die.
Edit - Thanks for all your reasons so far guys. I don't believe in it still, but it's nice to know how the other side thinks.

I'm not going to get further involved with this, except to call some people willfully ignorant. I'm no fanatic of global warming, but to say that it is an "unproven theory at best" is to ignore the science behind it.
