Hit and run bos furywarrior PoV.
crit, hit, hit, hit, (deep wounds falls of), crit and run.
i keep damaging the bos with a nice dot thats ticking and its ofcourse terrible downing my DPS cause for a fiew moments I do les then 500DPS on him.
This is the advantage in damage done imo.
I use DPS mostly though to compare with how I do, if you wanne know wich DPSplayer is better I would say it's better to look at damage done or DPS at Patchwerk.

On a Kara run long long ago, the top two damage dealers in our group were a fury warrior and me (frost mage). I was doing considerably higher DPS than anyone else (twice the warrior's) but, he was matching me on damage done, both at about 50% of total.
Since then I watch both and have yet to figure out where the difference in the 2 stats comes from. It does not always reflect those who die early. He has dots, you don't (they artificially lower his dps compared to yours).
He doesn't need to drink, you do. (this ups his damage done because he is fighting longer than you, while not necessarily helping his dps)
In the end you might be frustrated on dps numbers but that's just e-peen bickering: the end result is, he did the same damage as you. Either that was artificial because of different combat mecanics (dots and all) and there's nothing to do about it, or it's because you were slow in regen or entering fights and whatever and you could have done much better than him but didn't which means the problem would be on your side.

Assuming that its appropriate to use damage as a performance measure for the fight in question, these two statistics provide different information.
DPS is the damage done per second during the period the character is considered "present" in the fight. As was mentioned elsewhere in a moving fight where the target has a low damage dot active, the character will be considered "present" even if they are otherwise dealing no damage, lowering their DPS. If the character dies early their DPS is calculated only until they are dead. The Heigan fight is great for this. Because groups often lose people in the first dance they will blow all cool downs as early as possible, this results in some people "topping" the DPS meter but doing 10% of the damage of people who live through the fight.
Damage done is much more straight forward. It is simply the total damage inflicted during the fight. Under ideal circumstances, where the player truly has 100% presence, the top DPSer will also deal the top damage.
If you have a fight where you need to burst a boss down, then you might well be more interested in DPS. Raid wide DPS is important because it tells you if your raid is going to beat an enrage timer. While DPS and DD are related, its damage that kills the boss. and IMO, at the individual level damage done is a more useful measure.

Noone can deny the fact, that DPS > Damage Done.
DPS = Damage *when* you attack.
DD = Total damage done, simple.
DPS is important, because it shows how much DPS the person can do, which is useful against some achievements & bosses, such as 3 min patchwerk.
DD is simply a 'slack' filter, and I don't take it too serious.

Nope.
What is the point in having a high dps, if you only dps for a short period of time?
The fact is, there is no superior measure - since without one you can't have the other.
Damage Done = DPS * Activity
100 damage done over 1 second is 100dps.
100 damage done over 100 seconds is 1 dps.
Either way you're doing 100 damage.
If someone has the higher dps and lower damage done, then they're most likely to be failing at staying alive *looks at people who fail at the Heigan dance*.

Damage done, for my mind, is a more important stat for judging contribution than DPS is, particularly in raid situations.
However, people judging these numbers need to be careful. Why?
A perfect example are Totems. Totems are set to benefit the
entire raid
, and need to be reset at the start of the fight (and quite often midway through). And, quite often, they can't be set down until you know where the monster is going to be tanked. This means that many fights for a shaman are started by laying totems. This
drastically
affects our damage done numbers. As elemental I was quite often in the bottom 3 of damage done, despite my clear contributions.
Overall I think damage done should be used as
one tool of many
in judging player contributions. But for the sake of the DPS vs Damage Done argument, damage done is a far more useful stat.
