Don't spend time in the Auction House buying gear or falling for trendy enchants, such as beastslaying (save early for that L40 mount!).
Be nice to everyone & remember they are trying to have fun as well.
Don't be afraid to ask questions at Wowhead -- we won't criticize you for being new (if someone does, I'll wack them upside the head!).

1) Have Fun. I know this sounds pretty basic. But a lot of people tend to make WoW into more than just a game. Remember what you're playing for, and just enjoy the game. If you like playing alts, play alts. Don't go for what everyone else wants you to unless that's what you want to do.
2) Be friendly, especially to lowbies. Kinda falls under that general rule of "Treat others as you'd like to be treated". It's pretty simple.
3) As far as game play goes... Pretty much what everyone else has said. There are far too many things for me to mention as "one" thing... So I'll just say one thing. Save money for skills and mounts. Mounts are expensive, but completely worth while. Don't worry so much about gear. You'll level fast enough and find good enough drops via instances or grinding or quests to satisfy your level when you need it.

1. Questing is faster leveling than instances
2. Try and find a good guild who will help you out with those group quests
3. If you want to get to 70 fast dont bother BGing

1. See everything. Sounds hard, since the old world is gigantic at first (and you haven't even been to Outland yet), but you really are short-changing yourself if you don't pause sometime and look at the scenery. Speed-leveling by doing nothing but quests may be the fastest way to 70, but you'll miss out on a lot of fun dungeons along the way.
2. Meet everyone. Ok, this is actually impossible...But the since WoW is multi-player and cooperative, don't be afraid to meet other players. You can help them, they can help you, and it makes the game much more fun. At lower levels especially, most healers could use someone around who can deal damage, and most melee types benefit if there's someone around to keep their health up. Maybe it's just my server, but I was pretty amazed by the number of genuinely friendly people out there. The only thing more fun than WoW is playing WoW with a buddy.
3. Have fun! You will inevitably notice along the way that the people who designed the game had a sense of humor when they did, and you should too. Don't take it too seriously. It's a game, perhaps even a hobby, but that's it. Don't agonize over gear choices and talent specs; the important thing is to enjoy yourself.

Spend your talent points so you do the most damage possible
Don't waste your time trying to find groups for questing
Log out in an inn or in one of the major cities
Create a second toon as your mule so that if you find something worth gold you can send them mail since mailboxes are nearly everywhere.
Try to work on quests -2 to -4 levels of yours

Use your resources! External websites such as this one have been developed to aid you! One site which may be
very
helpful to you is
WoWWiki
, which while underperforming on the database side, can be very useful at explaining the lore, or other things you may be confused with. Combined with Wowhead, you're unstoppable!
Try
all
the classes, at least to level 20/30, just to get a taste of each. If, at that point, you still don't like them, don't delete them (just don't continue to level them)! They may become useful farming/bank alts for whichever becomes your main, and, who knows, perhaps you'll end up leveling them to 70 anyway.
Ask questions (extension of #1)! It doesn't matter whom of, just go out there and do stuff. If you get stuck, ask a guildmate (if you ask all your guildies and none of them help you, I would suggest leaving that guild). If none can help you (as in, they don't know), look up the quest or item here on Wowhead to see if the comments can aid you. And if that still doesn't help you, come check out the forums. Someone will have had your question at some point in the past, and so you're probably going to be able to get your help here, if nowhere else.
On a final note, this was an excellent idea for a thread. Thank you Vanden.

If you see a small guy on your screen in yellow and red colors, it's time to visit a blacksmith. It means your equipment is in dire need of repairing. Broken (red) items will have no effect.
If at first, you don't succeed, try again, then later. Or get some players to help you.
Be polite. Most people will be so in return. ;-)

All of the advice here is excellent and pretty much covers anything really important I'd tell someone (the advice about bags and gathering tradeskills is excellent and the first thing I tell any lowbie).
Read the exclamation points that pop up on the bottom of your screen. These will help you pick up a lot of the real basic aspects of the game.
Most of the classes are somewhat obvious on how to play them relatively well. Hunters aren't. If you choose to roll a hunter don't melee mobs down or use strength gear. Get mostly Agi/Int/Stam gear, let your pet keep mobs off you as you shoot them down. Do that and a little research on your class and you're ahead of most of the hunters already.
Read the advice in the thread again. It's excellent.
