What i usually do on the adherents is to AS before they get their shield up, then just go #$%^ing nuts to do as much threat as possible before they shield.
This way there'll hopefully be enough DPS to bring them down before anyone does more threat than you.
Usually works well for me.
Bringing down their shield to do more threat on your own is hopeless, so talk with a DPS before that's on your side to help you bring them down quickly, pref a rogue/hunter that can MD/TotT when the shield goes down.
Also ask your RL to assign 2-3 DPS (1-2 if you talked to a DPS to help you already) on adherents, once they get empowered they will start WTFPWNing dps.

I've done the same so far. Adherents are always our first targets. My taunts are practically on CD every add phase though with happy go lucky dps going insane after 1 tick of consecration while trying to pick up add 3 that didnt get hit by consecration and is making a beeline straight for that tree >.<. It's a chaotic fight but I quite enjoy it.

Uh, what the hell. Lady Deathwhispers adds are a breeze.
Why do you even tank Adherents? They do spell damage. They do the same damage to tanks as to everyone else. They do not insta-kill anyone. We do not try to tank Adherents at all. Melee runs to them, melee kill them, they move on to Fanatics, then to the boss. Simple. The only thing our tanks do is picking up the Fanatics.
The 10 men version can be done with a single tank, but you need a high burst of threat at the beginning, and raid members who know how to reduce their threat. I can accumulate enough threat at the start to last until the end of the fight without the requirement of using any threat reducing abilities by the DPS. The tank will only have to get 1 fanatic or 2 fanatics, depending on the wave.
The 25 men version we do with two tanks. One takes care of the wave where two Fanatics spawn, the other one takes the one where only one fanatic spawns, and watches out for the add that spawns behind the raid... if it is a Fanatic, he tanks that one too. We never had trouble with DPS dying when Adherents were not tanked, even if they go empowered. Becoming empowered only nets them more DPS attention, and they die that much faster... we also have 2-3 melee DPS assigned to each adherent that spawns on the sides. When one of the adherents dies, his melees move to another one, and so on. If there is an Adherent coming from the back, they kill him last.

This. Adherants are not your problem - they should be receiving face full of mace from the melee right after spawning, and die very quickly, thanks to said mace-face interaction.

I agree, they should be dying before its even a problem. Taunt them, drop a consecrate, leave. Its what I do.
