All
of the Highborne sunk with Azshara and were transformed into naga. The entire palace, the city around and the land in several miles diameter were devoured by the Sea. It is impossible for anyone to survive that, if they were in proximity.

Problem with that Lovechia, all the highest ranking highbourne, the most powerful and Aszhara's favorite, were involved with the portal. So they either died in the closing, or they would have been there as the city fell and the Old God's offer to save them.

Which goes against everything we know about Aszhara, the Highbourne were her pets, and she was infatuated with Sargeras, if she had 6 Highbourne that powerful, they would have been on the forefront of the portal creating/opening.
The Shendralar are different.

: They just stuck to their cities, they had nothing to do with the Aszhara Highbourne. And like Argent said, it's impossible for anything within Azshara to survive during the sundering, everything else moved a few decades/centuries after the cataclysm. 5 Highbourne hiding in a volcano? They would have been killed by either the explosions or the tidal waves.
Which is the other problem. There is only one volcano on Kalimdor, the rest of the continent is stable, where does this dormant one come from? There was no mention of a volcano anywhere near the Aszhara are in the past.

Can anyone explani to me how Malfurion survived? I didn't read the War of the Ancients trilogy and I don't intend to (can't stand Knaak), and as far as I can tell, Malfurion was close to the portal when it exploded. How did he not die?

Pfft, everyone knows Malfurion would counter that with another explosion!
/sarcasm off
I'm not entirely sure to be honest on that one, never did get to that thing..

It actually doesnt say, just checked his wowwiki post and it just says: The Well of Eternity exploded in a catastrophic eruption that left the world sundered forever. However, Malfurion survived.
I really should re-read that series again.
Also....Rhonin the Red Haired forever heh.

Although I'm quite sure that the Azshara Crater will be released as a new Battleground one day, I doubt that it will be in this expansion. I think the Maelstrom expansion would be far more fitting, and thus it'd be a ?-90 Battleground.
But at least, these mechanics will likely not be implemented. It is exactly the same as Alterac Valley, with only a few twists. Even Blizzard isn't lazy enough to create two Battlegrounds which are exactly the same. I think that they will try to come up with something new.
